Today marks the beginning of Pride Month, a vibrant and empowering celebration of LGBTQIA+ identity that brings together communities around the world. For many of us, it's a time to reflect on the struggles, victories, and progress made by the LGBTQIA+ community throughout history. So, let's delve into the origins and evolution of Pride Month, exploring how it has transformed into a global phenomenon that fosters acceptance, equality, and pride for people of all sexual orientations and gender identities.

Origins of Pride Month: The Stonewall Uprising

The roots of Pride Month can be traced back to the Stonewall Uprising, a pivotal event in LGBTQIA+ history. On the night of June 28, 1969, a police raid took place at the Stonewall Inn, a popular gay bar in New York City's Greenwich Village. Frustration and anger boiled over as members of the LGBTQIA+ community fought back against the ongoing discrimination and harassment they faced.

Marsha P. Johnson, a transgender woman of colour, and other key figures played a significant role in the resistance against the police. Their defiance sparked a series of protests and demonstrations that lasted for several days, galvanizing the LGBTQIA+ community and igniting gay rights movements all over the world.

The First Pride March

A year after the Stonewall Uprising, the worlds first Pride March, known as the Christopher Street Liberation Day March, was held in New York City on June 28, 1970. The march commemorated the events of the previous year and served as a symbol of unity, visibility, and demand for equal rights.

In the years that followed, Pride Marches and celebrations began to spread to other cities across the United States, and eventually around the world. These events not only provided a platform for LGBTQIA+ individuals to express themselves freely but also raised awareness about the ongoing struggles for equality and acceptance, many of which are still being fought for in 2023.

The Evolution of Pride Month

As the LGBTQIA+ rights movement gained momentum, Pride Month evolved beyond the confines of a single march. It expanded into a month-long series of events, celebrations, and activities that aim to honour the history, resilience, and achievements of the LGBTQIA+ community.

Today, Pride Month encompasses a wide range of activities, including parades, festivals, art exhibitions, film screenings, panel discussions, workshops, and community outreach initiatives. These events foster a sense of community, provide education on LGBTQIA+ issues, and promote inclusivity and acceptance.

Global Impact and Recognition

Over the years, Pride Month has transcended borders and become a global celebration of LGBTQIA+ identity. Countries around the world now hold their own Pride events, contributing to the visibility, message of world-wide unity and rights of LGBTQIA+ individuals globally.

More than that, though, the significance of Pride Month extends beyond the LGBTQIA+ community. It's become a symbol of solidarity and allyship, encouraging people from all walks of life to join in the celebration, stand up against discrimination, and support equal rights for everyone.

Challenges and Continued Struggles

While Pride Month is a time of celebration, it also serves as a reminder that, now more than ever, the amount of work needed for true equality within the community remains significant. LGBTQIA+ individuals today are facing increased rates of discrimination, violence, and legal challenges in many parts of the world. Recognising and celebrating Pride Month this year needs to focus less on just 'love is love' and more on the fact that queer and trans people all over the world are at serious risk of danger. This year more than any other, Pride Month is essential for those looking to create a platform focused on raising awareness, advocating for change, and fighting for full equality.

Throughout Pride Month, I'll be posting articles daily to make as much information as possible as accessible as possible - and yes, that also means I'll be sharing a list of the most binge-worthy LGBTQIA+ shows out there! My top 5 goals are to

  1. Increase awareness of the anti-LGBTQIA+ laws being passed all over the world right now

  2. Emphasise the importance of LGBTQIA+ representation for all in all forms

  3. Advocate for change within the UK

  4. Connect with more LGBTQIA+ people

  5. Share more of my own story to raise more surgery funds
